I am seeing more in the deaf cultured community being accepting of cochlear implants, definitely the extremists are totally against it. Many within the deaf community now have it. However, for the extremists - for the most part - seem to see it as being okay if one were old enough to decide. Yet, many do not understand why it is important to have implants early as one year old. If many were to decide to have em later in life, the success would not be evidenced as it would be for those implanted as an infant.

I think over time, cochlear implants will be less controversial.

Used to be I thought implanting babies were cruel, that was five years ago. Now, the more I understand why it's critical to implant earlier, my views have totally changed. If mine has changed, others will too. Except for the extremists, of course. ;)

I would think you better wait til the new technology that would improve the hearing since I am profound deaf since toodle. I have hear that stem that can grow the better nerve and hair inside the ears will stand up. I hope that will be done soon so they can do it on humans.

This is something really interesting, deaf people should also get chance to use some of the amazing iPhone application. All of these are fabulous app that are quite useful as well as entertains deaf people. I think now there should be something to blind people too.

Thank you for sharing your list, Thomsen! Out of curiosity, how many apps do you review prior to determining the top 10? What do you think about the Shazam application in comparison to TuneWiki? Also, what about the CapTel app in comparison to ClearCaptions?

I looked into it, but I can't edit other people comments; I can only list the comments as spam or completely delete them. So, I'm gonna go with the latter option and leave it so all people can see the attempt at repair ;-) And yes, you are correct that these are my personal opinions. Although, I don't have a mass following yet to setup a poll and allow my readers to vote on what they think were the best apps of 2011...maybe next year? Who knows? I do love your comment about how it would be great to know what the saturation percentage is for a specific app since that would, without a doubt, and in your own words, "convince businesses that there is economic sense in creating accessibility tools, and it would also show developers, activists, and entrepreneurs what kinds of features are the most popular".

Am I right in guessing the ranking is your personal opinion? It would be really cool if you could demonstrate the reach of these products within the Deaf community, what saturation percentage or something like that. For one thing it would help convince businesses that there is economic sense in creating accessibility tools, and it would also show developers, activists, and entrepreneurs what kinds of features are the most popular. Then new applications can be created that build on success.

In particular, I am thinking about emergency management - warning, response and recovery from disasters, and also about integrated online education, where Deaf and Hearing learn about the same content and also about each other at the same time.

Thanks for putting this together - exciting stuff!

Most of Sorenson production/products has not been that impressive...however, I admit that I have not tried Buzzcard and it actually looks and feels like and excellent application. Give me afew days to test it out and I'll let you know what I think.
